I am JOHN POLLARD a keen sailmaker and SB20 owner and I want to tell you why…
I have competed in Melges ,viper ,K6 ,X99,1d35 the one design list goes on and of course the renowned cork 1720 ( also a Tony Castro design) and in my opinion SB20 offers the best racing of all the various ranges ,very close with small marginal gains bringing successes !!
the SB20 is a fast and nimble performer and have had some of the best racing rides of my life in the SB20 most memorable in Cascais national championship with Xcellent rounding 6 meters in front of the fleet and wow Atlantic waves in sunshine at 18-20knts of velocitek boat speed with a fleet 30+ chasing us ,every SB20 sailor will have there own memory of this great boat .
Set up is a mixture of preparation and upgrade when necessary , not least apparent with our UK fleet at the latest windy UK nationals with many unforeseen breakdowns , mostly avoidable with routine inspection. The SB20 is tough I have raced in 35knts at the Dutch championship with no damage fortunate I know but we always check the boat !!
I am delighted to support SBW and the SB20 family wherever I can. I am a pro sailmaker and supply race sails for all permitted classes but curiously that’s another reason for my love of the SB20 – The majority of sailmakers have alternative hobby’s and passions outside of yacht racing ,the SB20 purist one design and class supply of sails is the best ever, as it is my outside of work passion and when I am competing I am on holiday – Its perfect !
I am passionate about the SB20 that’s why I have two ! GBR3724 & GBR3754 I am lucky enough to have a fantastic local fleet to sail Wednesday evenings and weekends and boy is that competitive ,they give me some of the toughest sailing on my doorstep ,there is nothing to choose between my two boats and they are set up identically even down to the same colour ropes, electronics etc I even have the same tiller extension and the club boat is on a keel down trailer with rudder ready to use in 5 minutes .
