The Cowes Grand Slam is nearly upon us – with racing kicking off on Saturday, 6 August for four days at the beginning of Cowes Week. Anyone who fancies some more orienteering around the Solent can of course continue racing during the remainder of Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week, with a full eight days of competition up for grabs.
The Grand Slam features three days of two races per day, with a fixed line first start followed by a committee boat second start to pack in the second race, followed by a fourth race day with just one race to complete the series. Competitors entered for the entire of Cowes Week can continue racing until Saturday, 13 August. More details are available online via the White Group Sailing Instructions.
So far 24 teams have signed up to race at Cowes, including Alec and Clairey Russell and David Atkinson, who were fighting it out at the front of the fleet in different boats last year, along with the return of Here Comes Bod, Sharc, the Phantom Menace, Sponge Bob and plenty of other familiar and memorable names! Expect John Pollard’s Xcellent team to be at the forefront, and watch out for the visitors from the Netherlands and Italy.
Meanwhile the Radley College team are likely to be contenders for the Youth prize, which will again be sponsored by Harken. Hyde Sails are backing the Masters’ category (both will also be offering category prizes at the 2016 UK Nationals, at Royal Torbay YC from 1-3 October).
Grand Slam entries include mooring at East Cowes Marina, team polo shirts, tickets to the social and a skipper’s ticket to the RYS Cocktail Party (so remember to pack some smart dress and best behaviour!). If you don’t require all of the above, or need additional, then best to email Pippa.SB20@icloud.com
The SB20 Cowes Grand Slam Saturday Social will see the fleet partying in Shepherds Wharf with a great dinner laid on of Brooklyn burgers, pulled pork burgers, New York hot dogs, chicken wings and hot sauce, spiced slaw and fries. Non-sailing guests are very welcome, and additional tickets can be purchased for £12 from the lovely Pippa.
