The Primo Cup – Trophée Credit Suisse took place in Monaco over two weekends in February, with the SB20s joining eight other classes for the first round of competition. In total around 1000 sailors competed at the traditional Mediterranean season opener, which saw both winter sunshine and grey, gusty days.
Royal Torbay’s John Pollard and ‘Xcellent’ (GBR 3724) took the win, after a close battle with Ed Russo’s ‘Black Magic’ (FRA 3706). Each team scored a win and counted a series of top five results, but Pollard’s two second places just gave him a one point advantage overall. A further single point behind in third was Carlo Brenco’s ‘Un’Altra Claudia’ (ITA 3578), with a consistent series.
Other race wins went to Johan Ravier’s ‘Oceanteam’ (FRA 3034) and Vasily Grigoriev ‘MST’ (GBR 3722), while ‘Team SMC’ were the only team to score two race victories, but having fallen foul of the Black Flag in Race four, were forced to count a 12th place which pushed them down to sixth overall. Other entries from Russia and Monaco joined the 15-boat fleet.
