George Leonchuk, the head of Ukrainian SB20 class association, reports that that the class is burgeoning in popularity and is developing rapidly in the Ukraine.
The Ukrainian fleet now has 21 boats in different cities around the country, including Kiev, Odessa, Zhaporozhie, and Nikopol, with both professional and amateur sailors taking part in various Ukrainian and international competitions. At this year’s World Championships in Italy five boats took part from Ukraine, three of which finished the competition in the Gold fleet, while former Olympic sailor Rodion Luka’s team won the silver medal overall.
The Ukrainian SB20 class association also organises different events and competitions at home during the year, including the Ukrainian SB20 Class Association Cup, over five Acts, a Ukrainian Championship, and DRUZHBA regatta. The 2015 Ukrainian Championship took place in Nikopol, a city in the south-east of Ukraine, with 10 boats from across the region taking part. In perfect weather conditions 10 races were held, and the winners were Rodion Luka, Bogomolkin Vladimir and Stasyuk Vladimir (Kiev-Odessa).
