There were some stunning conditions in the south of France for the first Cannes Sailing Cup from March 6-8. The Yacht Club de Cannes welcomed 12 SB20s for 10 intensive races and two “speed runs” over three days, in ideal conditions of bright shining sun, 8-15 knot winds and the spectacular surroundings of Cannes and the Lerins islands. Visitors also raved about the organisation, with much appreciated details such as a Pasta Party on the first day, which saw fresh hot pasta served to hungry sailors on the pier!

The Russian ‘Melstrom Team’ (RUS Alexey Murashkin, Igor Ignatenko and Kiril Frolov) dominated the event to win, followed by ‘Xcellent’ (GBR John Pollard, Steve Proctor, Micky Schwarz), and ‘Black Magic’ (FRA Edward Russo, Gilles Favennec, Cédric Chateau) third. The Italian ‘Stilo’ team was awarded the 4th place, while ‘Give Me 5’ (FRA) put in a very promising performance to finish fifth overall and first in the Youth category. First women were ‘Ocean Team Solutions’ (FRA Helene Urutti, Ariane Berthelot, Geraldine Lemaire and Johan Ravier), who were ninth overall. In the UK the Brooks MacDonald Warsash Spring Series got underway on Sunday March 15. Two weekends’ of racing have been completed with yesterday (March 29) cancelled due to 45-plus knot gusts forecast. Pieter Heyn’s ‘F5 Synthesis’ is currently leading the charge, with three more weeks to go, including two Spring Championship Weekends on 18-19 April and 25-26 April.

There was also a great fleet of 17 SB20s for the Prova SB20 at the Clube Naval de Cascais – check out our facebook page [https://www.facebook.com/SportsboatWorld] for the images. Rob Clarke’s ‘Wildebeast’ and Chris Darling’s ‘Darling Associates’ (GBR) have joined a Portuguese, Russian and Irish entry for some early season Atlantic sailing.
