Phil Plumtree, Monaco, Primo Cup 2015

We meet Phil Plumtree, who launched his new SB20 Liteboat at Monaco for the Primo Cup

Name (skipper): Phil Plumtree

Boat Name: Liteboat

Sail Number: 3731

Crew: Niels Lovag ( a.k.a. ‘Frenchy’) Bruno Van Dyke ( a.k.a. ‘Junior’)

Why did you choose to sail in the SB20 fleet? I chose the SB20 fleet after being ground down by Jerry Hill over about 10 years, I first sailed with him in the Europeans in Brest in 2004 with Pasty, where we finished second but we both got flicked, I was asked back and had a good regatta in Le Harve in 20111 — again with Jerry and we were joined by legend Marcus Hutchinson.

I have for the last 19 years sailed and raced my classic yacht Arrow in mostly European regattas, and my RBOD 20 Ariel, and had my leg pulled about beards and baggy wrinkle so though it was about time I manned up and joined the fleet.

As it was my selection of boat 3081 , refurbished by Sportsboat World, was genius and we were overnight leaders in my first ever regatta at the RSYC prior to the 2013 worlds. It has to be said that dinner that evening with Jerry ( lying 3rd) and the rest of my crew was worth every penny spent!

What is your and your crew’s experience in one design racing? I sailed Lasers as a kid and J/24s in the 80’s , Frenchy has a thing about the Surprise… he can’t stop talking about it and junior sleeps on any boat he can get his grubby paws on.

Which events are you planning to compete in during 2015? We will be in Monaco with the new boat 3731 and stay in Europe for Cannes, Hyères and Torbole… returning to UK for Cowes and the National Championships.

Do you have a favourite SB20 sailing memory? Er tricky one… maybe it was leading the fleet in Race 5 at the 2013 Worlds… but also the heavy air races inHyères with the boat under water were epic.

Where is your favourite sailing location? Favourite is St Tropez , we seem to do ok there in the classic yacht regattas.

Have you sailed your SB20 there? Not yet … let’s organise a regatta.

If you could change one thing about the SB20, what would it be? It’s evolved well and I’m happy with the product now that Sportsboat World are in charge.

When you’re not sailing, what do you do? I build things and I cycle and row coastal boats, the Liteboat in fact.

Anything else we need to know about you?! Apart from a bit of OCD… not a lot.

When not racing his SB20, Phil also sails a classic 'Arrow'
