Over 40 sailors tried out the SB20 at the National Yacht Club on Saturday 5th October in glorious weather. The day surpassed all of the organiers expectations . 20 – 25 sailors were expected; and over 40 sailors took part on the day. Everyone was very positive about the boat and all expressed interest in crewing or helming.
We had serious interest in used boats and 3 sailors asking serious questions about brand new boats. Justin Burke’s new SB20 (3717) was on display.
One thing was highlighted during the Open Day. Many sailors were confused over the rebranding from SB3 to SB20; many people were of the opinion that the SB3 class had imploded and it was a welcome opportunity to sort out the confusion and advise them that the rebranded fleet SB20 is very much alive and kicking! The SB3 fleet never went away, simply Sportsboat World are now the builders. The Open Day also provided a great opportunity to inform the Irish Sailing Community that the SB20 is now built by White Formula in the UK.
8 Irish boats went to the SB20 Worlds in Hyeres France, racing in sun, warm water and a Mistral will always be memorable in any sailors life . The SB20 acquitted itself very well even in a 35 Knot Mistral.
The SB20 in Cork harbour has expanded to Cobh Sailing Club and usual racing continues at RCYC. With a strong program of 6 regional events in Belfast, Cork and Dublin Bay racing in the Irish fleet is well organised for 2014.
If any other SB20 Fleets would like to host an Open Day, please contact Sportsboat World for support.
